To win the Steinholding contest, you’ll need to outlast your fellow competitors by holding a filled, regulation 1-liter stein directly in front of you, with perfect form, for as long as possible. Once the judge signals the start of the competition, after a 60-second grace period, no adjustments are allowed—your arm must remain fully extended, straight, and parallel to the ground, with the stein held by the handle only. If your form falters, judges will issue a strike. After two strikes, a third will result in disqualification. However, even a single drip or spill of beer—no matter how minor—will result in immediate disqualification, regardless of how many strikes you’ve received. Maintaining flawless form under pressure is the key to victory.
This contest is conducted under the official U.S. Steinholding Association Rules, Version 1.4, last updated in April 2024. These rules are nationally recognized and ensure a fair, consistent, and challenging experience for all participants. From the specific type of stein used to detailed judging criteria and disqualification procedures, the rules are designed to maintain the integrity of the sport and prepare winners for potential advancement to the state and national levels. You can read the full rulebook on the U.S. Steinholding Association website for more detailed guidance.
Fame. Glory. Honor. And, of course, his/her name permanently engraved on the legendary Steinly Cup. In addition, the top 3 finishers in both the Men’s and Women’s divisions will earn invitations to compete at the Michigan State Championship this October.
Starting in 2025 there is a dedicated children’s division for younger participants ages 11 & under who want to join in the fun. Instead of the heavy 1-liter glass stein, children will receive a smaller 0.5-liter plastic version filled with root beer. This division is just as competitive in spirit but is designed to be safe and enjoyable for kids of all ages. Depending on the number of registrants, we may subdivide the division by age and gender. The children’s contest takes place on Sunday afternoon and promises to be a highlight for families attending the festival.
We limit the field to 50 total competitors—between the men and women. The split is generally around 30 men and 20 women. Spots are limited and tend to go fast. Once we hit capacity, that’s it—no steins, no glory. If you’re thinking about entering, sign up early to secure your spot.
The registration fee is $40 ($20 for children) and includes a filled regulation 1-liter stein (1/2L for children) for use during the contest. Payment is collected at check-in. Both cash and credit cards are accepted.
Yes, we do accept credit and debit cards. Participants will need to make their payment upon check-in on the day of the event.
We strongly encourage participants to embrace the spirit of the event by wearing traditional German clothing—think Lederhosen or Dirndls—to add to the festive atmosphere. That said, your outfit must also follow competition rules: Braces, supports, or grip-enhancing materials (like gloves, pine tar, or grip powder) are not allowed. Compression gear is fine, but stiff or supportive athletic wear (like bench press shirts) is not. Elbows must remain visible to the judges at all times, so be ready to roll up your sleeves if needed. Dress comfortably, dress festively—but most importantly, dress within the rules to ensure a fair and fun competition for everyone.
Upon arrival, please check in at the contest registration table near the beer tent.
Competitors must use the provided regulation 1-liter dimpled glass stein filled to the marked 1-liter line. The stein must be gripped by the handle only, and your thumb must rest alongside your fingers—not on top of the handle. Your arm should be extended directly forward, not to the side, and kept perfectly straight without any bend at the elbow. It should remain parallel to the ground and not supported in any way by your chest or torso. Leaning or tilting to either side is not allowed, and your off-hand may not touch your stein, arm, or body for support. Any movement or contact with outside objects or people is grounds for disqualification. Judges will be actively watching for violations of these rules and may issue strikes for poor form or misconduct. Full compliance with these standards is expected throughout the competition.
The USSA officially recognizes this contest, and the winning participants qualify for the Steinholding State Championship. The top 3 contestants from each division (Men's and Women's) will receive invitations to the Michigan State Championship held in October. For exact time and location, visit the official USSA website.
